ALG will present the 5th generation of COB LEDS by Citizen Electronics at LIGHTEC

The 5th generation of COB LEDS by Citizen Electronics is already in production and marketing is underway. Its new version is up to seven per cent more energy efficient than its predecessors. ALG, the official distributor of the Citizen Electronics LEDs in Spain and Portugal, will be at LIGHTEC.

The main improvement offered by this generation, however, is a 35% reduction in thermal resistance. This improvement in heat conduction entails a number of benefits as a result of design decisions taken by the luminaire manufacturer.

If the designer does not want to change any other components of a luminaire, by reducing the Tj of the LED (Tj= Rjc x Pd +Tc) the final product is more efficient, brighter and has a longer useful life, since the LED will work under the best conditions.

If the designer wants to maintain the same level of brightness for the product, the supply current must be decreased by replacing the driver. This improves the efficiency of the product, gives it a longer life and most likely, lower driver costs.

If the designer prefers to reduce space and use a smaller dissipator, (when the dissipator is reduced the thermal resistance increases), it is possible to increase the Tc LED by reducing this in the COB5.  This produces more compact, economical luminaires thanks to the reduction of the dissipator.

If the designer wants a much brighter product with the same dissipator, the manufacturer can afford to supercharge the LED with more current to further increase the lumens of the luminaire.
